Congresswoman Pregnant! (Psst. She's Not Married)

This is annoying. Rep. Linda Sanchez, who I think is an amazing and awesome feminist speaker is pregnant! Congrats! Good for her! Except all the Washington Post can focus on is that she's not married. *gasp*

Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.) is pregnant with her first child, the Los Angeles Times reports this morning. Which is hardly unusual -- several other congresswomen have given birth in office -- except for the fact that Sanchez isn't married . . . yet.

The dad is Sanchez's serious beau of more than a year, Connecticut consultant Jim Sullivan, and she tells LAT op-ed columnist Patt Morrison that they're "unofficially engaged." But since she's 39, they didn't want to wait any longer to start making a family.

So, no wedding date set yet. Their baby is due May 21, the Times reports.

What is this? Do we still live in 1961? People who aren't married have babies all the time. I think it's time for us to get over it.

exactly!
society is always so quick to judge a woman's character by her sexual choices. if a girl has had sex, she is not a slut. if a candidate it pregnant and not married, she is not a "bad" person. if men got pregnant too, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of our mayors/governors were pregnant before marriage. but alas, women are the ones being given all the blame because they are the ones who have the physical proof.

elections have in general been ugly this year. ideas like "obama is a muslim! don't vote for him!" or "congresswoman is pregnant and she isn't married" are irrelevant and frivolous. in addition, these sorts of statements imply that ALL muslims are bad people and that pregnant women are somehow "less" of a person.

our culture grosses me out.

Wait, what was she supposed to do when she got pregnant? I love what's left unsaid. Like she shouldn't have been having sex out of wedlock? She's 39! Hardly a child. I think we can stop wagging our fingers.

This is utterly ridiculous. I happen to think that the overwhelming the amount of interest that's taken in the private lives of politicians. They're treated more like celebrities than anything else.

I married my daughter's father, which turned out to be a mistake. I have yet to marry my son's father, and we have a loving family environment for both children. Why does marriage and pregnancy have to be such a big moral issue? That ring has nothing to so with the matter of someone being a fit mother.
